Welcome to Rose and Lion Leadership programs! Elementary school-aged children join us in the imaginary world of Redwood Creek, where there are mysteries to solve and fun ways for children to learn how to become leaders. Kids meet the characters and hear stories about their fun, silly and exciting adventures. They join in the story through games and experiments, and then apply skills to real life, too, by running leadership projects with some help from great coaches.
The vision of Rose and Lion Leadership is that you can (1) be who you are and (2) still feel like you belong.
We’ve included a snapshot of our approach, philosophy and some of our work below.
First, here is a video overview of our ENTIRE program based around seven key themes: curiosity, compassion, self-empowerment, inclusiveness, courage, forgiveness and perseverance.
PARTNERSHIPS
We offer focused leadership programs in partnership with schools and clubs (eg, YMCA, Scouts, Boys and Girls Clubs, parks and recreation, cooking camps) with fun and creative themes. These programs can be part of a day off camp or a 2-hour camper activity.
OVERVIEW of our program and how we teach leadership skills to children
We work with children to help them nurture the leadership skills in their true nature – in alignment with Rose and Redwood’s slogan Nurture your true nature.™ We’re called Rose and Lion Leadership because, once you rise up in alignment with your values you can say “I rose.” We begin with that vision of success – because every interested child will rise. Then, when you learn to effectively use your voice and talents, you’re using your voice like a lion, who roars to protect the pride. This generation of children will use their roar to make a positive difference, help people feel good and inspire others to join them.
Whether we’re doing a 2-hour event or something longer, we follow a simple, proven approach.
Our APPROACH to teaching children leadership skills
Stories have been used for centuries to teach us important lessons. We use story-telling to encourage children to use their imaginal sense. Kids connect with the story and we then use it to transition to practicing skills and solving “puzzles” (leadership-related problems) before applying it to real life.
In short, it looks like this:
HOW DOES A ROSE AND LION LEADERSHIP PROGRAM LOOK AND FEEL?
Fun + Creative.
Below is an example of a mini-program created for young elementary school children (1st-2nd grade). We’re sharing this example so you can see how early we can begin to teach leadership. For older kids, the story is more complex, but the activities are still fun and relevant – in fact, these activities work with adults, too!
We then use embodied learning – the visceral, feeling, heart-based and embodied experience – to bridge to real-life by solving puzzles (or problems). For an afternoon program with 3rd to 5th graders it may look like an activity (below). In the longer program, we would investigate how to create more sustainable solutions to an issue such as habitat loss or food disparity.
WE INTENTIONALLY CULTIVATE SKILLS THAT LEADERS NEED
Here’s a surprising fact: A 2017 study predicted 85% of jobs that today’s kids will have in 2030 haven’t been invented yet.
Our children will likely have jobs that DON’T EVEN EXIST today! But, we can prepare them to have skills that are essential to leadership – skills that make a positive difference to people and the world: curiosity, compassion, inclusiveness, self-empowerment, perseverance, forgiveness and courage.
WE CREATED AN IMAGINARY WORLD –
SO CHILDREN CAN LEARN TO BE WHO THEY ARE AND STILL FEEL LIKE THEY BELONG.
By stepping into the world of Redwood Creek, we enter a safe space to learn, grow and play before applying what we’ve learned to the real world.
